Matthew Calvin is an online brand that creates affordable luxury jewellery.
What is your role at Matthew Calvin and what does it entail?
I founded the business back in 2014 after noticing a gap in the market for affordable but well made, luxury jewellery. My main role is designing new collections but as we’re only a small team of four we all end up getting involved in different aspects of the business.
Where are you based in Hatton Garden, and how long have you been here?
We’ve been in our Greville Street studio for just over two years now. It’s a really nice, light space with huge windows that run down the whole length of the office, perfect for our collection of plants.
What sets your business apart from other businesses in the industry?
Matthew Calvin was named by the Independent as one of the best online jewellery shops. Our jewellery is best known for it’s simple shapes and delicate styles. styles. It is best described as affordable luxury jewellery.
What has been your proudest moment since working at Matthew Calvin?
Last year we were approached by John Lewis to sell in all stores nationwide. This was a great 'we’ve made it' moment followed by the realisation of what a mammoth task that was going to be. Thankfully we managed to pull it off and make it happen.
What’s your favourite thing about working in Hatton Garden?
Theres such an interesting mix of people working in the area. From the old-school jewellers that have been here for years working alongside young designers who are new to the area. It’s the perfect place for us to have our studio as all the suppliers and manufacturers are all in one area.
Have you (or any friends or family) made a jewellery purchase in Hatton? What did you get, and what was the occasion?
I haven’t made any purchases on Hatton Garden but I’ve definitely made lots of bespoke pieces for special occasions. We have a full bespoke service for engagement and wedding rings.
Where’s your favourite place to get a coffee in Hatton?
Department of Coffee and Social Affairs on Leather Lane has great coffee and friendly staff, what more could you ask for?
Where’s your favourite place to get lunch in Hatton?
Leather Lane market has it all - whatever you’re looking for it’s there. Can’t fault it.
Where’s your favourite place to get a drink in Hatton?
The Craft Beer Co. on Hatton Wall is where we tend to head after a long day at the office. In the summer everyone spills out onto the street to enjoy the last of the sunshine.
