Within my first quarter working with you all in Hatton Garden, I feel great strides have been made in line with our core values that you, as local members, voted in favour for in the recent 2021 re-ballot. From talking to local businesses when I first started, a key issue that was raised was the desire for greater security presence to deter anti-social behaviour. To combat this issue, we have ensured that our local security team regularly patrol the area at random times every day to help keep the area safe and secure. Similarly, our on-street community facilities manager, Luis Carlos, works tirelessly to keep the streets clear and clean. We want Hatton Garden to be a safe and welcoming...
Alongside the rest of the country, we are deeply saddened by the passing of Her Late Majesty The Queen and we send our condolences to her family. For 70 years, Her Late Majesty has been a symbol of inspiration and dignity and has reigned with supreme grace. This is a seismic moment for our country. London will now become the focal point for the forthcoming funeral, and the arrangements for this will have a significant impact on the capital for the foreseeable future with travel and normal business activity restricted. We are in regular communication with partners at the Metropolitan Police, local authorities and other statutory bodies so will serve as a primary conduit of verified...

On Friday 11th September the Government announced that it plans to stop offering tax free shopping to all international visitors after 31st December 2020. This will mean losing a £3.5 billion sector and undermining Britain’s global appeal and competitiveness. We know from talking to our business community that this is yet another blow, at a time when many are still struggling due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The decision is not just something that will impact retailers, it will have a ripple effect across many sectors including hospitality and culture. Similarly, it is not only a London problem – the reality is that the tax free incentive does encourage visitors to...

This is exciting news for Hatton Garden jewellers and retailers who are raring to get back to business; and we want to ensure that you feel ready and able to reopen safely when the time comes. This is why we’ve collated the necessary steps businesses need to take in order to become COVID-19 secure according to the latest government advice, which will best prepare you to welcome back your workers and customers on 15th June. This includes carrying out a specific compulsory risk assessment and demonstrating that...
The doors of many Hatton Garden offices are likely to remain closed for a little while longer, since the government’s recovery plan offers no clear guidance as to when non-essential workers might be able to return to their places of work. But each business and the people behind them remain our biggest priority. Although office work has been displaced for the moment, we know it continues remotely for many teams dispersed throughout London and beyond. We also know that it can feel increasingly difficult to stay motivated and feel connected when it has been so long since you’ve seen your team in person. So we wanted to share some tips on how businesses can...
At Hatton Garden BID we are committed to keeping our local businesses and community up to date as we move through these uncertain times. As part of this continued effort, we wanted to provide some clarity on the latest government advice on holiday entitlement during the coronavirus crisis. The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy has released official guidance with regards to annual leave for employees both in work or on furlough. This is in line with emergency legislation passed for carrying forward annual leave, and reflects the unprecedented circumstances which both employers and their employees are currently navigating. In essence, the necessary updates...
*Last updated 13th May 2020* This guide aims to help individuals living or working in Hatton Garden understand how to travel safely during the coronavirus outbreak in England. It provides the official government line on walking, cycling, using private vehicles (for example cars and vans), and travelling by taxis and public transport (for example trains and buses). You should avoid using public transport where possible. Instead try to walk, cycle, or drive. If you do travel, thinking carefully about the times, routes and ways you travel will mean we will all have more space to stay safe. Is your journey necessary? To help keep yourself and your fellow passengers safe, you...
*Last updated 13th May 2020* On Monday 11th May the government published its COVID-19 Recovery Strategy, so we wanted to update you on what it means for the valued businesses and residents of Hatton Garden. The strategy is made up of a series of steps which aim to gradually lift the existing restrictions on social distancing and ease the economy back to work. This is a long-term strategy for managing the coronavirus until we have a reliable treatment. It’s important to note that the steps will be subject to constant review and implemented as and when it is deemed safe, over the coming weeks and months. Additionally, measures will be more targeted and reactive than they have...

Debbie’s experience of developing partnerships and bringing people and sectors together to deliver better outcomes will be invaluable to the businesses and stakeholders of Hatton...
The retail industry as a whole has been hit hard by COVID-19, with the luxury sector feeling some of the harshest effects. However, we’ve seen spending rebound post-lockdown in China across all industries, including luxury. When Hermès reopened their second-largest store in Guangzhou they took £2.7million in one day. While an increase in digital sales and online presence is expected to stick in the long-term, in-store experiences will certainly not stop altogether. The brands emerging from this not only surviving, but thriving will be the ones who can corner the online market and then successfully convert new digital customers into their retail spaces. Offering a...

The Goldsmiths’ Company announced the launch of their COVID-19 Fund this week. The Fund aims to help those in the jewellery trade who are in financial difficulty due to the coronavirus. At present, just 21% of businesses that have applied for these loans have been accepted so far. Launching at the end of the month, you will be able to apply online for either a grant or loan from The Goldsmiths’ Company if you are a member of the jewellery, silversmith and allied industries. You must also be self-employed, a sole trader, or running a...

We’re in the midst of the COVID-19 outbreak and the focus of most businesses is on crisis management. Thinking about troubleshooting is of course really important, but don’t forget to look ahead at the opportunity this period is offering too. The changes we’re seeing in consumer behaviour are really a rapid acceleration of existing trends - significantly a shift to digital - and it seems likely they’ll continue even once the crisis is over. With a huge surge in online traffic and activity, this is such an important time for your business to be visible online and echo consumers’ new priorities. Get talking to your customers to make sure you’re...

Together We Are Stronger: Ruth Duston OBE, OC The COVID-19 national emergency is a rapidly changing crisis impacting all our lives. In a little over a week we have moved from a largely ‘business as usual’ strategy being adopted by the Government to this week, getting used to living in a society with the strictest restrictions on our personal liberties since the Second World War...and there may still be more to come. It’s seems hard to overstate how huge an impact these changes will have on our country, our businesses, families and loved ones. The recent economic support packages announced by the Government indicated the...

One of the biggest dilemmas that many businesses face when allowing staff to work from home is staying connected. The great news is that there are hundreds of free apps and tools out there to make collaborating whilst working from home easier. If working from home is new for you and your team, here are some of our favourite products to get you started. Why not give them a try? 1. Slack Slack is a free app available for both Windows and Mac devices. It’s an alternative to email, allowing you to chat with colleagues one-to-one or as a group, which comes in handy when working on specific projects or when you need a quick response. Slack allows you to send...
Everyone knows working from home can be a difficult transition, especially if you’re used to working in an office, shop, or even a bar or restaurant! There are distractions around the house; and if you live with other people it can be difficult to get the peace and quiet you need. Team working is also made all the more tricky by the distance. But when executed right, working from home can be enjoyable and productive. Depending on your industry you may be busier (or far less busy) than usual at this moment in time. If the latter is true, this is a great time to think about how you might be able to do things differently at work, brainstorm opportunities for new business and new...

On Friday 25th January 2019 a new Hatton Garden sign was installed at the junction of Greville Street and Farringdon Road, adjacent to what will become the Elizabeth Line exit from Farringdon Station. The sign was commissioned by the Hatton Garden BID and created by design and wayfinding consultants, Maynard Design. Inspired by the rich history, culture and personality of Hatton Garden, it features engravings of historical highlights from the past 800 years — from the grisly tale of Lady Elizabeth Hatton’s death in 1626 to the origins of Leather Lane Market, now a hotspot for London foodies. The materials used were also chosen specifically to reflect the local...

Among these is Mark Hicks, a third-generation independent jeweller, who founded Farringdons Jewellery in 2006 as a stall in The Heart of Hatton Garden Jewellery Emporium. Mark’s son Liam joined the family business in 2011, when Farringdons moved to its current home on Greville Street. We spoke to Mark and Liam about fly-pitching, buying vintage and one of London’s best kept culinary secrets... How did you catch the jewellery bug, Mark? As the temperature soared to a sweltering 30 degrees last Thursday (5th July), locals and visitors took to the streets for the 2018 Hatton Garden Party. Traffic gave way to street entertainers, food and community stalls; while artisan jewellers set up shop in Bleeding Heart Yard, alongside the British Academy of Jewellery and the Institute of Professional Goldsmiths, for a pop-up market sponsored by Seaforth Land. JUDGE the poet, who has previously performed for Queen Elizabeth II, Nelson Mandela and Bjorn Borg, wowed the crowd with his sharp, spontaneous verse, as a town crier directed visitors towards human statues, stilt walkers, jugglers and acrobats. Fifty teams competed for...
A huge thank you to everyone who joined the Bleeding Heart Group and Hatton Garden BID on Thursday 24th May for the unveiling of Bleeding Art - a one-off mural commissioned for Clerkenwell Design Week 2018 and live painted during the three-day festival. Created by renowned street artist ATMA (who also directed Bleeding, our 2017 commission for Clerkenwell), the mural was inspired by the grisly murder of Lady Elizabeth Hatton, the second wife of Sir William Hatton, whose family once owned the area around Hatton Garden.
